It is a global event organized by the World Conservation Organization (WWF).
It was first held on March 28, 2008 in 35 countries around the world and over 400 participating cities. Known worldwide as Earth Hour, this action, organized by WWF for the seventh year in a row, has evolved from a one-city initiative into a major global movement involving more than 7,000 cities and towns in 152 countries last year, hundreds of millions on all 7 continents.
With the extinguishing of many world landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower, the Egyptian Pyramids, the Tower of London, the Greek Acropolis, the Harbor Bridge in Sydney or the Empire State Building in New York.
Every year, around 70 Croatian cities participate in this campaign.
The walls of Dubrovnik and Diocletian's Palace have been symbols of Croatia for many years and are included in the modest list of UNESCO buildings in the world that participate in this campaign. Likewise, other Croatian cities with their symbols, such as the Cathedral in Zagreb, the Fortress in Osijek or the Water Tower in Vukovar, have been participating in this campaign since 2009. as well as numerous central squares and waterfronts on the Adriatic coast.
Entered in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest volunteer action in the world, March 28 marks the jubilee 20th edition of the global Earth Hour initiative.
Millions around the world turn off their lights for one hour every March to show their unwavering commitment to protecting nature.
